AITA? I’m going to book club, but I haven’t read the book…
And it's fine to fake it 'til you make it 'Til you do, 'til it's true… weird… but f*ckin’ beautiful ;)
I’ve started many a book club in my decade of adulthood, and through the clubs (all the hot girls love to club, don’t ya know), I’ve come to the conclusion that meetings should be open to anyone, but those who have not finished the book may will encounter spoilers at their own risk.
Of course for this specific circumstance I don’t really think “I’m the Asshole,” but then again even if I were, would I know it?
The club in question is the hottest club in town. Like we’re talking puts the “HOT” in HOTLANTA, hot. (That sentence is so disrespectful to my favorite group of women, I can’t believe I’m not deleting it immediately.) This is a group of friends from very different circles of my life who have come together and formed deep friendships with each other, independent of me. They have found and grown a community I could only dream of, and now carry it on without me.
If I’m lucky, there’s already a book club scheduled for any of my impromptu trips home to Atlanta, but if not, they’re the first crew I contact to get something on the books.
It’s impossible to put the vibes into words. It’s the most positive, loving, warm, sassy, sarcastic, hilarious, safe space I’ve ever visited. So yes, I’m an addict and will be going for my fix tomorrow even if I haven’t read the book.
The book is Weyward by Emilia Hart. Have you read it? Should I?
TBH it wasn’t anywhere near my tbr until I purchase the audiobook on libro.fm* for today’s meeting. I love libro.fm because it’s the same price as audible except you get to choose an independent bookstore to support instead of Amazon. (Which is cool if you’re the kind of person who cares about supporting small businesses.)
*(I linked my referral link, so if you sign up for a monthly membership through this link I may receive a free audiobook credit.)
Here are just some of the books we/they have read over the years. (Bunny is not included on this list because I refuse to mark it as “want to read” on goodreads which is required to include an unread book in a tag.)
Yes, our name is “Turnt Pages,” because we were established by 22 year-old recent grads in 2017 looking for an excuse to get wine-drunk in our parents’ suburban kitchens. Fret not, 7 years on we have ~matured~ and now call ourselves “naughty audi[o].” And by we, of course I mean me.
Tl;dr:
If you didn’t read the book, shut up during the book chat. Keep your comments to questions.
You can’t have an opinion if you didn’t read it. Well you CAN have an opinion, but you don’t have one worth contributing to the conversation.
It’s the soap box I climbed up on in 2018 when people dismissed the one-of-a-kind masterpiece Insatiable as fatphobic from the trailer and refused to watch the show. (Says the girl who didn’t watch Chappelle’s special based on headlines - but I also didn’t put it on blast without watching it.)
Bonus Lesson: mix the dang friend groups
We all know I’m just going
A scroll down memory lane…

Hyper-fixation du jour: Nerds Clusters
Y’all! They’re so good. These used to be on my “don’t eat” list because I GOT THEM CONFUSED WITH Big Chewy Nerds (yak!). These are like the nerds rope, but better!
Nerds are no longer just pet rock food.
Madura and Belinda get full credit for this new addiction! And Miranda has expanded it by introducing me to the superior flavor, that is Very Berry!
Looking for a fun game? Buy a bag of both flavors, have your friend close their eyes, drop one in and have the guess!
This is so cute! Totally agree that mixing friend groups leads to such a good book club mix!
